Chronic fatigue is a complex medical condition characterized by extreme and persistent tiredness, fatigue, or exhaustion that is not improved by rest and is not directly caused by other medical conditions. Some key features of chronic fatigue include:
- Ongoing physical and mental exhaustion that lasts 6 months or longer
- Lack of energy to complete daily activities
- Worsening of symptoms after physical or mental exertion
- Sleep problems - difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or unrefreshing sleep
- Difficulty with concentration, memory, or clear thinking
- Muscle and joint pain
- Headaches
- Sore throat
- Tender lymph nodes
The specific causes of chronic fatigue are not well understood, but some
contributing factors may include:
- Viral infections like Epstein-Barr virus or human herpesvirus 6
- Immune system dysfunction
- Hormonal imbalances
- Emotional trauma or stress
- Genetic predisposition
There are two main types of chronic fatigue syndrome:
- ME/CFS (myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome) - a serious long-term illness with multiple symptoms affecting many body systems. ME/CFS can be disabling and has no known cure. Treatment focuses on symptom management.
- Idiopathic chronic fatigue - unexplained persistent fatigue without other ME/CFS symptoms. Usually less severe.
If you struggle with
unrelenting exhaustion lasting over 6 months, it is important to meet with your doctor for an evaluation. They can run tests to help determine if chronic fatigue or ME/CFS could be the underlying cause, and to rule out other issues with similar symptoms like an underactive thyroid, sleep apnea, depression, etc.
While chronic fatigue can be difficult to manage, making lifestyle changes, pacing daily activities, engaging in gentle exercise when possible, eating a healthy diet, and reducing stress through relaxation techniques may help
alleviate fatigue symptoms. Support groups and counseling can also help those struggling with the life disruption caused by chronic exhaustion.
